The desire and persistence to carve better and better decorative decoys, and the desire to find a basic technique that would apply to almost any species motivated him to write the book, Decoy Carving 101 in 1992 along with a student, Bob Lorenz. In this book he explained the techniques he has used for many of his decorative decoys.
In 1997 he attended carving classes on caricature carving, and has also been carving caricatures in his spare time.
